Film Club - A Bump Along the Way

Tuesday 14th January 2020 / 8:15pm

When Pamela a free-spirited, fun-loving 44-year-old single mother becomes pregnant from a one-night stand, she is shocked! But not as shocked (and horrified) as her straight-laced teenage daughter Ally, who finds her mother’s behaviour embarrassing at the best of times. As both women have to come to terms with the impending new arrival, they are forced to face some home truths about themselves and each other. Pamela is pushed to finally stand up for herself against a bullying ex, as well as her judgemental daughter and the baby’s dad, while Ally faces an identity crisis and the awkward twists and turns of first love. A charming, warm, authentic film about family and the unexpected challenges life throws at us all...

Tearoom Sessions - Jeffrey Foucault with Ry Cavanaugh

Friday 24th January 2020 / 8:15pm

In two decades on the road, Jeffrey Foucault has become one of the most distinctive voices in American music, refining a sound instantly recognizable for its simplicity and emotional power. He has built a bricks-and-mortar international touring career of multiple studio albums, countless miles and general critical acclaim. He has been lauded for “Stark, literate songs that are as wide open as the landscape of his native Midwest” (The New Yorker) and described as “Quietly brilliant” (Irish Times).

Appearing with Jeffrey is Ry Cavanaugh. The son of a honky tonk singer from Stamford, Connecticut - Ry has been a central figure in the Boston Folk and Rock scene for the last 25 years. He’s also something of an adopted son of Donegal, having spent a year living here in 2009/10 where he hosted a song-oriented session in McGrory’s, Culdaff performing regularly with local singer-songwriters Finbarr Doherty, Kate O Callaghan and The Henry Girls.

Writer's Weekend 2020

17th - 19th April 2010

'Every story has a beginning, a muddle, and an end.' Philip Larkin
Introducing a mix of theory, writing prompts and group discussion, this weekend course will steer participants through the elements of writing effective fiction. Referencing proven masters, Lisa Harding will focus on  'Voice, Character and Dramatic Action' in fiction, and Alan McMonagle will examine beginnings and endings; voice, tone and point-of-view; characterisation and dialogue; language and setting; and, of course, 'the muddle'. We will also look at what fiction, both long and short, attempts to achieve, and apply prompt-based exercises to topics covered. "
